L’Artisimmi is the work of Anna Gawley, an artist based in New York City.
Trained in traditional water and oil gilding, art restoration methods, and custom framing practices, Gawley approaches contemporary objects through a classical lens. Her background in microscopic jewelry carving and precision craftsmanship informs a meticulous attention to surface, scale, and detail.
Working with wax as both medium and sculptural surface, each L’Artisimmi candle is painted by hand, with wax itself used to build a relief-like frame around the painted image, finished with gilded accents. The act of making is inseparable from the knowledge of its eventual disappearance.
The cylindrical form turns the image into something encountered rather than possessed. Without a fixed front or back, it asks the viewer to move—to circle, to remain attentive. Like the phases of the moon, the image appears and withdraws, revealing itself only through angle, light, and time.
At the intersection of painting, gilding, and sculpture, wax is treated as a living surface—one that responds to light, heat, time, and human presence.
Wax and light from earlier candles are carried forward as new works are formed. Flame offers illumination and continuity, while wax becomes the frame and relief for each new gilded surface. In this way, every work receives an inheritance, entering a lineage rather than standing alone.
L’Artisimmi is founded on the belief that beauty belongs in everyday spaces—not as decoration, but as presence. Each piece is created as a singular work or in intentionally small editions, meant to inhabit a home with the same quiet deliberation as a painting, transforming ordinary interiors into domestic museums.
